Kung Fu For Kids

Child Abduction: Avoidance and Awareness Defeating the Bully Without Fighting

Kung Fu builds confidence and character by providing the child with control over his or her body and the ability to stand up to peer pressure.

The movements of Kung Fu develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility, which is very important during the growing years. A child's healthy future begins now: research shows that fit children are more likely to remain active as adults.

The awarding of the higher levels of Kung Fu sashes (belts) gives the child a sense of achievement and accomplishment. Training for these tests and passing them, enhances the child's ability to concentrate, plan for and triumph over learning hurdles. This is then transmitted in the child's school work.

The foundation for Martial Arts is its self-defense value. The Sifu's (teachers) are very careful to teach children that Kung Fu is not to be used outside the class in any manner other then in true self-defense. The result is a self confident child, who does not need to bully or show-off to other children.

Kung Fu classes are enjoyable and fun, but yet they are educational and teach important life skills to our young students in a family-like atmosphere. Increased self confidence, positive attitude and self discipline helps the child to develop a "can do" attitude towards life.

Children start to learn discipline from the very first lesson. Immediately, students figure out that they can't do what ever they please. A child exhibiting unacceptable behavior receives reproof and correction to teach what is acceptable. Kung Fu teaches students respect, not only for others, but for self as well. The instructors teach on the same level with the children, developing not only a good rapport but a mutual respect.

Kung Fu schools have an excellent street proofing program, where students learn how to recognize dangerous situations, how to avoid them and how to deal with them if they can't be avoided. Each class is usually closed with the "Message of the week" which reinforces a positive behavior principle. One thing we do understand is, that "Kids are Kids" they need to have fun while they learn and need to be treated differently than adults. We know that children have shorter attention spans, so we approach classes in different ways so they don't loose interest.

Competitions and demonstrations are an optional part of Kung Fu training. It is recommended because it allows students to face their fears and overcome ego issues that may arise in a competition situation. In Kung Fu training, the goal is awareness and mastery of the body. The goal is not to "beat" an opponent or to achieve a black belt. Every thing a student does is to gain self-knowledge and self-mastery. So you can see that Kung Fu training and its many benefits will enrich a child's life within his or her school years and throughout adulthood.
